Black slip was the foundation of my surface work when I first began making. I came upon a deep, rich black that I still return to from time to time. Its use connects to an early love of art history and to the long lineage of slip-coloured pottery across cultures — from Neolithic societies in China and Africa to Pueblo potters, particularly the Mimbres peoples. Carving lines and patterns and filling them with slip remains a deeply satisfying process.
