I began exploring small functional objects while teaching from my home studio, when many students were looking for guidance in making useful things. It offered a way back into regular studio practice through everyday utilitarian forms. Mugs became a favourite format to explore outline and studio glazes, while small planters found their place housing plants. In the garden months, vases became a compositional outlet for colour and surface, made to hold the dahlias I grow.
